The Legazpi Expedition
When Prince Philip became the King of Spain, he ordered the Viceroy of New Spain to prepare another expedition to start in Mexico. His interest in colonization was prompted by his desire to make Spain as the greatest country in the world. He also wants to have all the wealth of the Philippines and to spread Christianity to the natives.
Miguel Lopes de Legazpi was appointed to be the commander of the expedition. There were 4 ships, 400 men and four Augustinian friars. They left Navidad, Mexico in November 21, 1564 and they arrived in the Philippines on February 13, 1565.
